Veggies Deluxe Chinese Steamed Tofu Egg
Chinese steamed egg tofu is a fast, easy, and healthy dish from silken tofu, eggs, and scallions. Add any vegetables to create your own steamed tofu dish.
Summer is time for quick and easy dishes, and this veggies deluxe Chinese steamed tofu egg not only fits the bill but is also super healthy. Aside from the requisite egg and silken tofu, you can customize this dish with any vegetable you have. I think this is a great dish to make when you need to use up the odd carrot or celery stick. :)
What do I need to make a Chinese steamed tofu egg?
For a basic steamed tofu egg, you will need:
- silken tofu
- eggs
- scallions
- salt
- sugar
- ground white pepper
- sesame oil
Then, you can add your vegetables. For this recipe, I add:
- carrot
- dried shiitake
But you can try other vegetables too, such as:
- celery
- bell pepper
- other mushrooms, such as shimeji, oyster mushrooms, or even button mushrooms
- ginkgo nuts
For omnivores, you can even add some of these:
- shrimps/prawns
- fish cake
- Chinese sausage
How to cook Chinese steamed egg?
Here is the step-by-step:
- Prepare a steamer over medium-high heat.
- Mix all ingredients in a mixing bowl into a uniform mixture, then pour into a steamer proof dish (e.g. any of Pyrex baking dishes).
- Cover the dish with aluminum foil and steam for 10 minutes.
- Remove from steamer, discard the aluminum foil, serve warm with steamed white rice.
Super easy, right? This dish is best when served with steamed white rice. And since it is so delicious, between me and my husband, we can easily devour this in one seating. When making this for a company, definitely try to double or triple the batch.
Veggies Deluxe Chinese Steamed Tofu Egg
Ingredients
- 25 gram dried shiitake, re-hydrate and diced (*)
- 100 gram carrot, diced
- 2 scallions, thinly sliced
- 1 block silken tofu (about 400 gram)
- 2 eggs
- 1 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon white pepper
- 1 teaspoon sesame oil
Instructions
- Prepare a steamer over medium-high heat.
- Mix all ingredients in a mixing bowl into a uniform mixture, then pour into a steamer proof dish (e.g. any of Pyrex baking dishes).
- Cover the dish with aluminum foil and steam for 10 minutes.
- Remove from steamer, discard the aluminum foil, serve warm with steamed white rice.
